Professors are split on AI coding assistants — how do you handle it?

Some profs straight-up ban Copilot on assignments, others encourage using it as a "learning tool". Our AI policy this semester says:

• Can use LLMs for understanding but not for generating submitted code
• Must cite any AI tool used
• Oral defense may be required

How's your department handling it? Do you feel like AI is actually helping you learn, or just making you dependent?

Hot take: if AI can do the assignment, it's a bad assignment anyway. Profs should redesign not ban.

I actually learn more with Copilot because I can iterate faster. Without it I get stuck on syntax and never reach the conceptual stuff.

My CS dept made an official AI policy matrix — profs check if you can reproduce what Copilot gave you in an oral exam. Fair but stressful.

I think we could put some limits on how the AI is used; I believe that would make it a very useful tool.
