How do you even think about the national debt anymore?

Every economics class I've taken has a different take on deficits. Paul Krugman says they don't matter at current rates. My public finance prof says we're heading for a crisis.

As someone who just wants to understand the world before I graduate — what frameworks do you use to think about:

  • Federal debt / GDP ratio
  • Social Security insolvency timeline
  • Effects of trade policy on inflation

Not looking for political hot takes, genuinely confused about what economists actually agree on.
